Transparency Is Working — Let’s Not Disrupt It
by Bill Merritt
The Boardwalk Subcommittee’s first meeting on February 7, 2026, did more than present data — it began restoring goodwill in Ocean City. After months of division surrounding Wonderland, the Subcommittee’s commitment to facts, transparency, and long-term thinking has lowered the temperature and given residents confidence that there is a path forward.
That first meeting also made clear why this process matters. The initial data shows that while tourism across Cape May County appears strong, Ocean City may be moving in the opposite direction in key areas, including a concerning decline in day-trips and beach tag sales. Available hotel occupancy data does not currently suggest a shortage of hotel supply, although more analysis is needed. The data also indicates that while traditional mechanical amusement rides may face challenges, other forms of entertainment are viable and could serve as meaningful draws for visitors.
In short, the issue is more nuanced than slogans or quick fixes. There is a clear need to activate the north end of the Boardwalk now, while also pursuing balanced and sensible long-term solutions. The former Wonderland site is a logical starting point for that compromise.
Of course, this type of work takes time. Complex data cannot be responsibly analyzed in a single meeting. We all want resolution, and the spring deadline set by the Subcommittee appropriately balances urgency with the responsibility to get this right.
Which makes recent rumors that the rehabilitation designation may return to Council on February 19 all the more troubling.
Why interrupt a process that is finally bringing stability and openness to this discussion? Why risk reopening division just as progress is being made?
Council should allow the Subcommittee to complete its work through a transparent public process that brings facts to light and builds community trust. Ocean City has already seen the benefits of that approach. Now is not the time to step backward into uncertainty.
